Why You Feel Bloated After Eating Rice (and How to Prevent It)

Rice causes bloating for some people because of its starch. Here is why it happens, why white vs brown and leftover rice matter, and how to enjoy rice without the bloat.

by Mouth To Gut Editorial Team

Rice feels like one of the gentlest foods there is — so it is confusing when a plate of it leaves you bloated and gassy. For most people the reason comes down to starch and how your gut handles it, and a few simple tweaks usually fix it.

Why rice can make you bloated

  • Resistant starch fermenting — some of rice's starch resists digestion in the small intestine and travels to the large intestine, where gut bacteria ferment it and produce gas
  • A big starch load — rice is starch-dense, and a large portion can be more than your gut breaks down efficiently
  • Portion size — a heaping serving overwhelms digestion more than a modest one
  • Individual sensitivity — people with IBS, slow stomach emptying, or enzyme differences are more prone to it
  • Leftover or fried rice — rice that has been cooked and cooled forms more resistant starch, so reheated rice can be gassier than fresh

White vs. brown rice

Brown and wild rice have more fiber, which adds bulk and fermentation — more gas for sensitive guts. If rice reliably bloats you, well-cooked white rice (basmati or sushi rice) is usually the gentler choice.

How to enjoy rice without the bloat

  • Smaller portions — try half your usual serving and build up
  • Choose white over brown if you are prone to bloating
  • Cook it well and chew thoroughly
  • Eat fresh rather than reheated leftovers when you can
  • Pair with protein and eat slowly to ease digestion

When to check with a doctor

Occasional bloating after a big rice meal is normal. But if rice (and other meals) reliably bloat you, or bloating comes with pain, weight loss, or changes in bowel habits, see a clinician — IBS, SIBO, or other conditions can make starches harder to tolerate.

Bottom line

Bloating after rice is usually about resistant starch and portion size, not an allergy. Smaller servings, well-cooked white rice, and eating fresh rather than reheated solve it for most people. Persistent bloating with other symptoms is worth a check.
